New Ghostdini

New theodore album maybe?

Also there is a few tracks doing the rounds by some of Wu I guess called Wu Block, here's one, don't know what the deal is with these dudes

Freeway- Early (just blaze)

This is fucking cool;

Better Music - Flash ft gqp

That Mos Def/Urethra Franklin blend is awesome. The original song isn't amazing but with that beat under it, it is the shit!
here's some new hip hop

Not sure what to make of this, it's great lyrically, not sure of it as a song, definitely interested in hearing more of this guys/these guys even if this isn't a song I will bump over and over

Gil Scott & Jamie XX

This was one of my fav albums of last year, I don't think I ever posted this on here. It's basically Jamie XX of the XX remixing Gil Scott-Heron the majority from I'm New Here. Maybe not everybodys thing but I like it. JR enjoyed your previous two posts.

Lil Fame & Termanology (Fizzyology) "After Midnight"

Yes & see said mirked Lil' Flame would Mirk the shit out of Rio

Reks - I Could Have Done More

Guy from JMT produced this also.

Guru - War Tactics

Proof bof two facts - the guy from Jedi Mind doesn't only produce tracks for bad rappers, and not everything that GURU has done with out Premo sucks.

Pretty Lights

Freddie Gibbs - "BFK"

Damn I can't wait, Damn I can't wait, Damn i can't wait to make my next LP

The other tunes that you can see on the label of this record are great too, can't believe I've never heard of this dude before, he's very famous...an I'm out like a trout.....

NSFW - By any means..

And that is not the acronym of a band playing homage to Malcolm X. Well he made a video to it, and it certainly exists..

Kendrick Lamar - The Recipe (Lyric Video) ft. Dr. Dre

Everybody talking about Kendrick Lamar at the minute. I'm just getting the album now, and will give some thoughts later, but for now, I really like this beat.

Also thought I'd give Schoolboy Q another go.. still pretty not great and that Hands on the Wheel track is still the best thing I've heard by him.

Dj Premier and Dynasty -Epic Dynasty

Diana

See what you mean about comments..

What I mean is that he doesn't really seem to know how to construct a song.. it's just a wall of rapping - he doesn't really give you time to appreciate what he's doing by switching it up and changing the tone.

I think that's actually why he's so good over the 93 and papparazzi beat - because the original has come before so he's got those parameters to work in. Not saying everything should just follow the standard rap track structure, but man, he has a lot of songs that are either a wall of rap, just have purely terrible hooks and choruses, or a combination of the two (and inevitably then bloated and overlong).

So that's something I felt came across when watching him live - I get fatigued with it. Although it's good, it's a lot of the same..

He was saying of the way he worked with Madlib - they would send each other stuff back and forth, but like, he'd rap over something Madlib sent him and what he'd then get back from Madlib was something completely different, changing the beat, changing the whole arrangement of the track and they go back and forth kinda moulding something that ends up completely different.

Thinking about, I think it's a lot like what Madlib accomplished with Percee P. I think he's a guy with a lot of the same talents and flaws, and Madlib absolutely brought the best out of him... whereas other rappers can just straight take a beat off a Beat Konducta album and make a nice track of it, they really benefit from his concentrated attention actually as a producer in the most traditional sense of it.

As regards his flow - could you give me distinct examples of slow and fast? I'm struggling to hear it. Sure, sometimes it's got a bit of a more laid back sound to it and sometimes more stacatto - I think he responds to the vibe of the beat to that extent; I don't think he's just spitting to a metronome totally regardless of the track. But could do with an assist to totally comprehend what you're getting at!

Ultimately I do think it's hard to say though, because he does just rap over a lot of really shitty beats.

Here is Freddie again, making an absoultely belting track over a beat from an original that I would say is definitely a classic (Tupac - Bury me a G):

thoughts on Maddie

it wouldn't format in the comments;

What did you read about the stuff he did with Madlib, and how is he live?
I enjoyed those tracks, especially the paparazzi one. I think he's exceptionally talented at making any beat his own. The fact that he can do it with paparazzi ( a song I heard a bazillion times smoking weed playing Tony Hawkes with James) is impressive enough, but to make 93 till infinity his own, is really something.
I think he has two flows though (fast and slow) and I'm not so enamored with his fast rapping. I think he's more than just a nice rapper, he is incredibly charismatic and (most importantly) that shines through on his records. He speaks with an authenticity that literally thousands of rappers spend their careers trying to manufacture. I think it's those two factors that make him stand out, but as 90 percent of Nas's career shows, it doesn't matter if you're the best rapper alive if you are doing it over a shitty beat. Madlib gets the best out of him for sure, the beauty of the soul samples is a simple juxtaposition for Freddie's flows. It's a formula that has been done before but rarely so well. I think Madlib too is at his best when working with an artist to craft a whole album (unless it’s Wildchild or Dudley Perkins) For me Madlib is always quality, but he’s on to returning to a Madvilliany consistency with this
Freddie really didn't need to have a pussy fight with the last ho in his video, that was lame, and was the first really forced and clearly manufactured thing I’ve seen him do.
Still here’s hoping Freddie keeps keeping it real and Madlib keeps on keeping  it right.

Gibbs (again)

Some thoughts on Freddie Gibbs based on recent discussion of his patchy output, having seen him live twice and reading about the way in which he works with Madlib -

He's a bit of a rapping robot, best as I can tell. He only really has the one flow - it's nice and all. He can definitely tell a good story, but I don't think he has any idea how to put a song together, if that makes sense..?

My guess is that he's very much reliant on his producers and collaborators to steer him in the right direction.

How did you get on with those tracks of his I posted, Jody?

And because nobody goes home empty-handed, here's Sean P impersonating Bob Ross with what ends up being a surprisingly decent painting:

Sean Price "BBQ Sauce" feat. Pharoahe Monch (Audio)

New Sean P album came out yesterday... Bought it digital off Amazon and been listening to it on repeat. It's great! (and no stinking Guilty Simpson in sight anywhere).

Bonus track that is iTunes only, fucking gay, is produced by Statik Selektah and ft. Freddie Gibbs. It's great, I want it - (I think P smokes Gibbs on this track, but maybe it's just not not a good beat for Gibbs' flow?)

Tuesday, 30 October 2012

Eugene Mcdaniels - Unspoken Dreams Of Light

This is off a record I've had for years, but hadn't listened to in rather a while. It's fantastic.

Gangsta Gibbs

Yeah, he is is patchy and it's definitely because of the beat selection... This is probably my favourite track of his outside of the Madlib stuff. Nice video too. Summertime cookouts! :
From the same tape, I really like this track too. Great beat:
This is the first thing I heard from him that made me get in to him in the first place:
Here he is over the Paparazzi beat (Xzibit not Gaga), because everyone loves that beat:

Which two tracks were you talking about btw? Thuggin and Shame right? Have you heard "Deep"? B-side to Thuggin. I like it even better:

Also, here's the b-side to Shame which I've just heard now for the first time:

David Ruffin - The Double Cross

I surfed through a few tunes from this album and it seems great, his voice is unbelievable.

Man love the Freddie Gibbs and Madlib tunes, those two tracks are two of the best lead singles for a album as I've heard. If the rest of the album is just filler I will cry. Can't wait to buy it (not from itunes). What other Freddie can you recommend, he's obviously brilliant and I have a few of his mixtapes, but I find a lot of the beats ropey, any choice cuts you wanna put over??

Here is the sample in its original form;

Apparently Preemo has flipped this tune (according to the least reliable resource in the world- youtube commenters) but I can't find it.

One of my favs at the moment

ODB- Strikly Hip Hop

I'm not altogether sober right now, but is this RZA's first attempt at the beat that eventually became dark fantasy?

much better quality with music vid here, this song is the shit, best Old dirt I've heard in years...

Janelle Monáe

I can't stop listening to Outkast and anything Outkast orientated at the moment I caught Janelle Monáe at Glastonbury and I think she's pretty hot!

I'd never heard this blackalicious tune but it was from an Xmas Target ad.

The Soul Of Nigger Charlie - Main Theme

Not sure if I've posted this before or not, anyway, It is tremendous and worth a repost if my memory has indeed failed me,

Wednesday, 19 September 2012

Hey guys, me and my housemate, mostly my housemate have started working as agents for getting live music here in Ho chi Minh. What I need from you guys s who are the best artists you have seen live in terms of rocking a crowd, especially, who would be good at rocking a crowd  even if the crowd werent familiar with them. can you help me out with this? You guys are pretty much experts here, so who that you have seen, however small or big could rock saigon?

Rahsaan Roland Kirk - I Say A Little Prayer - Live 1969

This guy is great, pretty crazy dude. I've got a bunch of his albums. This is a live version of his version of Say a Little Prayer which is fantastic. Bassist is going pretty nuts as well.

He plays a lot of nose flute, but not in this song. Which is exactly what it sounds like - a flute shoved up his nose... It's usually what you're hearing when you hear that flute interchanged with odd guttural vocal melodies like in that Harold Alexander track you posted the other week Jody (you know, the one that's off Cut chemist Rare Quations).

That Young Rascals track is great btw. Have you listened to much else they've done? How is it? Worth checking out?

Khrysis

A name I'd always been aware of but never consciously considered. Due to the fact that I've been listening to a lot of Little Brother recently I decided to check out some more of his production and read a bit more about him. Firstly it was cool finding out how many tracks he produced that I like that I didn't know were him.. apart from having my favourite beat on the Minstrel Show which is no mean feat on an album mostly produced by 9th, he did Da Grind from Long Hot Summer, a whole bunch of tracks for Sean P, Kaze, Jean Grae.. and of course I'm finding some other cool stuff that I never heard before:

That's off the Away Team album "National Anthem" that he produced all of.. I need to get that.

I don't know who the fuck Cesar Comanche is.
I would have thought a guy called Edgar Allen Floe would be a nerdy white guy. Turns out it's a nerdy black guy.

I GET HIGH (HIGH ON YOUR MEMORY)

This was on a Flying Lotus mixtape that James gave me - great song. (It's been sampled on a Styles P track - the whole mixtape is basically Fly Lo showing off his crate digging skills)

Monday, 27 August 2012

Harold Alexander - Mama Soul

Found from link surfing after that Sanity tune.

rasco-me & my crew

I don't have the "Time Waits for no Man" album on my hard drive and hadn't heard it for ages - stuck the cd in the car the other day and DAMN! It's a great album. I love the beats. Really simple but hard. The rhymes aren't overly fancy either.. no overwrought concepts or particularly thoughtful pieces, but just solid raps with his nice voice.

Particularly good for driving around to.

Friday, 24 August 2012

Mr Green - LIve from the streets

There are are few of these. Basically, Mr green rocks around the street recording stuff. He then takes it home and makes a beat out of it. Usually introduced by a needlessly aggressive MC like Jus Allah or Vinnie Paz. I like this cause he makes something awesome out of a dirty buskers tune;

here is an amazng one from China

He's made an album out of all the beats.

Also James keep up promoting Riff Raff he's a genius. And Joey Bad A 2 dollars is tremendous, DL'd his mixtape. It's dope.

Raekwon & Babu

Stacey Dash gets a mention in this track!

NECRO - "TOXSIK WALTZ"

New Necro! The song is pretty cool, but the video is hilarious. Reminds me a bit of Braindead, or some cheapass horror movie.

Murs & Fashawn!

Bonus - Girl on Guy podcast w/ Jean Grae. This is Aisha Tyler's podcast. She's the comedian/actress who plays Lana in Archer amongst other stuff. I've not listened to it yet but I guess it should be good.

Mister Nice Guy

Yo,

And peep this second link for my other tune of the beat battle - this was the beat I made from the samples Akhil gave me, and in retaliation for the crap he restricted me to, I made it a diss record. =)

Let me know what you think!!!

Mister Nice Guy

Bow Bugaloo - beat battle!!!!

Masta Ace & MF Doom: MA_DOOM - Nineteen Seventy Something

MA_DOOM album - Masta Ace spitting over his favourite Special Herbs. I only just read about this.. From what I've read I understand this is available now as a digital download purchase. I'll give him my money, if I can find somewhere to get it for that isn't iTunes, and that I don't have to sign up to on a monthly basis.

"The Man with the Iron Fists" OFFICIAL TRAILER

I'd like to hear this over a beat as the lyrics are pretty good, just not feeling the flow - maybe putting htis over a beat would have been a good idea?

Well Jody haven't heard much from you lately. I thought as you posted all that Swansea shit last season I only though it right that I express that "We're Kompany". It was an amazing end to the season. If Man U had won it would have been a travesty, they have been dire at times (maybe not as dire as Forest). Akhil Vs Mark - Beat Battle (part 3)

Hey folks,

Just a head's up that Ak and I have been beat battling and we'll have our new tracks finished in a month's time.

This time we've both chosen one song to sample and use as the melody (drum and bass can come from anywhere). Then we swap records, make another tune (hence the next month), and then post them here - you get to decide which tunes are best.

In the mean time, I've shared the link to the tune I sampled.... I know it's not the 'done' thing but I don't give a monkey's and I don't mind leaking this as far as the blog. However, if it goes platinum, this post will be deleted and this didn't happen!

Rappertag 11 - Fallacy

This is to some grime temp beat which I'm not sure of, but I think Fallacy smashes it. Particularly good  given the generally low level of quality of this series so far. Enjoy!

My Entry

No idea who these guys are but they are extremely lazy. I think this is like Hyper crunk or something. I like the fact the song is called I Don't Like so I disliked them on youtube because of this and it's the first vid I've ever disliked. I think Jody would get into their crew though, he'd be the one wearing no pants instead of no shirt. Once they see his massive scar he'd fit right in. I also like the guy with the hand gun with extended mag. I've never been into guns but this is probably the hangun I'd have as I'd need an extended mag as I'm sure I'd miss plenty of times. Also over a million hits, seriously there must be some crunked out muthafuckas out there I don't like. Peace

New El-p ft. Killer Mike. I like the beat.

Worst Rap song: Lil B - "Wonton Soup"

Here is my entry to the competition, JR.

I thought this was a joke track (a la Reh Dogg, not intentional and awesome like Yung Humma) but I see online that people actually rate this guy. He did a 45 minute unscripted talk at a prestigious University (I forget which one).

I can only surmise from the lyrics to the track that Lil B has never had sex before.. seriously on some inadvertant 40 yr old virgin bags of sand shit, here. The best lyric, though, is "bitches wanna fuck me cos I look like JK Rowling". This is astounding when you think through the logic in his idiocy. Firstly, he doesn't know JK Rowling is a chick. Then secondly, he has assumed that JK Rowling must be a grown man that looks like the Harry Potter character he created (Lil B wears black Hary Potter glasses). Thirdly, saying he looks like (his ficticious invented) JK Rowling because of said glasses is as absurd as Ghost saying he raps with a British accent.

That said, I have listenend to this song so many times now (it's a bit of a cheat as I didn't find it this week, but I thought it ties in nicely with your challenge).

Wu Pizza

Luiz Bonfá - Jacarandá

Even though the internet can probably tell me all this stuff already if I cared to search, and undoubtedly thousands of people have got there before me, I still really get a kick out of it whenever I buy some new records and a loop crops up that's been sampled on a track I've listened to a million times unexpectedly.

Slam Dunk N' Hoes

That awesome J-zone article got me diggin on the net, found this piece of perfection;

Yes Slam Dunk N' Hoes. What does that mean? Slam Dunk and Hoes I think, but that's not what the cover really conveys. This is tremedous on so many levels, the lack of effort in Top Dogs facials, the height of the hoop and how blatant it is that she's not upsidedown.  Her facial expression does it the most for me, that hjoe loves a dunkin'.
here's a tune from it, predictably woeful.

It's from this article which has some other great album covers on it.

How about this as a challenge for the week, who can find the worst hip hop song? noshitty freestyles cause you'll never beat Eli Porter . Man that class of 2005 was hot

Marly Marl The symphony

This is the shit.

Umm, the bottom one is better, the top one is half speed or something, bloggers playing up and I can't delete it

Wednesday, 18 April 2012

I didn't mind thay Hopsin. It was funny in parts but yes could see it could get stupid with dumbass hooks. I've been listening to A$AP Rocky for a while now, his CD is ok. Like Peso though which I'm sure you've heard. Great tune. My friend told me about this Childish Gambino it's got loads of hits, sounds ok!

Lee Fields can't remember if I posted this already. May have been a while back

Monday, 16 April 2012

Update!

So, I downloaded the Hopsin album.

He's pretty good. He kinda reminds me of early Eminem which is a bit of an odd comparison because I've never liked Eminem.

Anyway, despite being a decent rapper, he has an uncanny ability of writing truly dreadful hooks and choruses that go on too long and appear too many times in each song, rendering the album quite shit.

Real shame, because some of his verses are great. More chorus-less straight 4 minutes of rapping tracks like that one I posted below are needed, Hop!

Hopsin - Ill Mind Of Hopsin 4

Nice one Mark.. good to check out some new shit.. that was a cool track.

In that vein, I have been hearing a lot about Hopsin and ASAP Rocky recently, so I thought I'd check them out.

This Hopsin track is really good, I'd really like to hear more of his shit.

Also, here's Schoolboy Q ft. ASAP Rocky; nice track, but I'm not blown away by either of them as rappers.

Georgia Anne Muldrow - Seeds (Official Music Video)

Georgia Ann Muldrew's new album is entirely produced by Madlib. I generally don't like being preached at in music. Nor do I like meandering RnB warbling that seemingly goes nowhere. Yet, she does both of these things quite a lot and I like her music.

What do you guys think of her generally? (apart from the amazing Kwanzaa song that of course everyone loves).
