The Brown Tape

New Ghostface is tremendous.

  1. I bought this album (mp3 version only a fiver!) and every beat is different than this youtube one that you've posted. Some I prefer on that one, some on this one. Really fucking odd though!

  2. Oh OK, it seems I have the "Brown Tape" version. All produced by Apollo Brown. Overall, I would prefer to have this version, dammit.

  3. Oh confusing!I thought it was the brown tape, because it was the new purple tape. Which do you prefer?

  4. After a few listens I'v realised a lot of the singing on this album is shoddy as hell.

  5. So, after a few listens of both I would say that I prefer the Brown Tape version overall.

I get that Adrian Younge was going for the whole "soundtrack-y" kinda feel, with a cohesive score rather than beats but I still feel it gets a bit samey. Brown Tape beats still appropriately tell the story with their dynamics, but with a bit more interest and variety.

All of the singing is gone from the Brown Tape.. But I really miss the singing from Beware of the Stare. I think it's great. The rest of the singing I don't really miss that much. Also, the beat for Rise of the Black Suits is better on the Adrian Younge one. But after track two it's the Brown Tape all the way.

Due to cutting the singing, and some of the speaking parts, the Brown Tape version doesn't tell the story as clearly. But I think you can still follow it easily enough and that the AY version kinda beats you over the head with the concept a bit too heavily.

  6. Oh.. one thing though - the cuts lifted and dropped into the Brown Tape sound weird. Though in time with the new beats, they're a bit off-key.
